Cleaning solution for an ultrasonic cleaner

The ultrasonic waves do the scrubbing. The solution does the dissolving, and it decides which metals the bath is safe on. Pick it by the metal first and the dirt second.

Every dose, temperature and time on this page is from the product’s TDS (technical data sheet). Prices are ex GST, delivered within Australia.

The basics

Why water on its own does not clean

An ultrasonic cleaner makes millions of tiny bubbles that collapse against the part. That knocks dirt loose. What happens to the dirt next is down to the solution.

The waves scrub

Collapsing bubbles break up the dirt on every wetted surface, including blind holes and threads.

The solution dissolves and holds

It gets under oil and grease, breaks it down and keeps it off the part so it does not settle back.

The solution protects

Inhibitors protect the metal while it is in the bath. Plain hot water leaves steel flash rusting within minutes.

Before you buy

Three questions pick the solution

1What is the part made of?

Steel and iron take strong cleaners. Aluminium, brass, zinc and magnesium do not. This rules products out before anything else.

2What is the dirt?

Oil and grease want a degreaser. Carbon and paint want a stripper. Rust, scale and ash want an acid or a near-neutral descaler.

3How hot can the part go?

Heat speeds every cleaner up. It also speeds up attack on soft metals. Run at the lower of the solution’s range and the metal’s limit.

The pH chart

Acid, neutral or alkaline, in one picture

pH tells you how strong a solution is. 7 is neutral, like clean water. The further from 7, the harder it works, and the more metals it attacks.

Below 7: acidDissolves scale, rust and ash. Attacks aluminium, zinc and brass.
Around 7 to 8: near-neutralGentle on soft metals. The safe start for aluminium and brass.
Above 7: alkalineBreaks down oil, grease and carbon. Above 12, keep it off zinc and watch aluminium.

pH figures are for the concentrate, from each TDS. The working bath is diluted, so it sits a little closer to 7.

Mixing the bath

How much concentrate to add

The dose is a percentage of the tank. A 30 L tank at 5% takes 1.5 L of concentrate and 28.5 L of water. The common doses are shaded.

Tank2.5%5%10%15%25%
MSX 15 · 15 L0.38 L0.75 L1.5 L2.25 L3.75 L
MSX 30 · 30 L0.75 L1.5 L3 L4.5 L7.5 L
MSX 50 · 50 L1.25 L2.5 L5 L7.5 L12.5 L
MSX 70 · 70 L1.75 L3.5 L7 L10.5 L17.5 L
Water first, then concentrate

Fill most of the way with water, add the concentrate, then top up to the fill line. It mixes without foaming.

Heat, then degas

Bring the bath to temperature and run the degas cycle before the first basket. Why degassing matters.

Any other tank size

The dosage calculator works it out for any tank and product.

Bath life

How long a bath lasts, and when to change it

Cleaning takes longer

When a cycle that used to clean in five minutes needs ten, the solution is spent. Drain and refill.

Oil on the surface

Skim floating oil every day. A layer of oil gets picked up again as the basket comes out.

Filter the bath

A filter bag on the circulation catches grit and sludge, so the bath lasts longer.

Top up with mixed solution

Top up with solution at working strength, not water alone. Water on its own weakens the bath.

Watch the parts, not the clock

A dull film or flash rust after rinsing is a sign the bath is tired or the rinse is too cool.

Dispose of it properly

Follow the SDS and your local trade waste rules. Never tip it into a stormwater drain.

Keep out of the tank

What not to put in an ultrasonic cleaner

Petrol, thinners and solvent sprays

The bath is heated and cavitation turns a solvent into vapour. A fire risk. Read why.

Chlorine bleach

Chlorides pit stainless steel, including the tank itself.

Dish soap and spray cleaners

They foam, and foam soaks up the cleaning power. No inhibitor, so steel rusts and aluminium marks.

Acid in the wrong tank

Only use an acid descaler at its stated strength and temperature, in a tank built for it.

A strong cleaner on soft metal

Caustic strippers on aluminium, zinc or brass etch and darken the part in minutes.

The wrong cleaner for the job

A jewellery or glasses cleaner is made for skin oil on gold and silver. It does little to grease or carbon.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask

What is the best cleaning solution for an ultrasonic cleaner?
It depends on the metal and the dirt. For oil and grease on steel and iron, FX Degreaser at 10%. For aluminium, brass or a mixed basket, AquaVantage 1696 GD at 5%. For carbon on cast iron, MetalTek 100.
Can I use plain water?
For light dust only. Water does not dissolve oil or grease, and steel flash rusts when it comes out of hot water. A cleaning solution dissolves the dirt and protects the metal.
Can I use dish soap?
It will shift a little light oil. It foams, and foam soaks up the cleaning power. It has no inhibitor, so steel rusts and aluminium can mark. It is not made for workshop dirt.
How much solution do I add?
The dose is a percentage of the tank. A 30 L tank at 5% takes 1.5 L of concentrate. The mixing table covers the MSX tanks, and the dosage calculator covers any tank.
What temperature should the bath be?
Inside the range on the product’s TDS. Heat speeds up the clean, but strong alkaline cleaners also attack aluminium faster when hot. Run at the lower of the two limits.
Which solutions are safe on aluminium?
AquaVantage 1696 GD, 815 GD, 815 QR-NF and 1990 GD, CoreKleen HX and the Alloy System. FX Degreaser only at 5%, 50 °C for 5 minutes. Never MetalTek 100, Descale or RegeniK.
How often do I change the bath?
When the clean takes noticeably longer than it did, or oil and sludge build up. Skimming oil and filtering the bath make it last longer.
Can I put petrol or a solvent in the tank?
No. The bath is heated and cavitation turns a solvent into a fine vapour. Use a water-based solution only. Read why.
Do I rinse after cleaning?
Yes, in clean hot water, then dry. The exception is Anti-Rust, which is left on the steel to stop rust.
Is a jewellery cleaning solution any good for parts?
Jewellery and glasses cleaners are made for skin oil on gold, silver and lenses. For grease, carbon or scale on metal parts, use a workshop solution.
